Jana
Pastel
22 x 28"
Jana said she wanted to "blow bubbles." Her mother knew exactly what
she meant, and found her the bottle. She was having so much fun
running around in the back yard and blowing her bubbles, that I
thought she would make a good painting. I photographed her and did
this picture.
Abe
Charcoal White Pencil
20 x 16 "
Abe taught me portrait painting.
He had the rare ability to
both paint and teach. The
"Abe" page has more information
about him.
Note the slight smile.
Your drawing has to be right
on with these materials, as
it is almost impossible to correct.
Martin Heidegger
pastel, 20 x 16"
This picture was done to illustrate a book cover. This type of drawing has to be done perfectly the first time, as there is no room for error. The white cannot be removed from the black, nor can it be covered over, without showing the evidence of your work.
Blonde
Pastel 28 x 22"
Here's a good-looking young blonde. I like the nice skin and hair colors and texture, and the color harmony between the skin, lips and eyes. Done from life.
Slip
Pastel
24 x 19 "
Here's another edge-lighted subject.
This woman looks good and is
pleased with herself.

Paul Graham
pastel
20 x 16"
This young boy is the son of a friend. We were going to Jack London's
home, and my friend brought along his youngest son. He was half
asleep, had a bad haircut, and was all bundled up. He made a nice
picture for his parents.
Russian Bricklayer
HB pencil
12 x 9"
This guy doesn't appear to be very happy. I probably wouldn't be
either if I were bundled up like that. This is an interesting texture
study.

Russian Priest
HB Pencil 12 x 9"
This is my first pencil portrait. This drawing and the Bricklayer took about 80 hours each to produce.
Sir Beecham
Charcoal and white chalk on sand colored mat board
20 x 16"
Grandma
Lithograph
12 x 10"
Here we have the dignity of age. The lithograph is of my grandmother.
This was drawn on a stone with a grease pencil. A print has to be
drawn in reverse in order to print normally, so I had to sign this
backwards. Try that some time! I like the nice, pleasant expression of
this kindly person, and the old print dress. I tried to capture some
universal qualities of old people, and time and space behind her.
Perhaps you can see your grandmother in this image. This print is an
edition of 50.
Nan
vine charcoal 20 x 16"
Another nice picture of a favorite subject. I didn't like it initially because I thought the charcoal made the skin look too rough. After I saw it several years later, I changed my mind.
Ben
pencil
11 x 8.5"
He drove up on a tractor and lit his pipe as he talked to me. He had a
twinkle in his eyes. Ben taught high school, farmed, and built a
beautiful house. He began college with one pair of socks which he
washed nightly. I feel some of his self-confidence comes through in
this picture.
